Description

It begins (and ends) at the centre of the interesting medieval town of Totnes, then passes along the River Dart through the Dartington Hall Estate, where there are lovely views over the middle Dart Valley. You could make a day of it and stop off at Dartington Hall or the Dartington Cider Press Centre nearby, where there are crafts, shops, and places to eat. The walk continues along lanes and through woodland, where you’ll see a mill with a working waterwheel before returning to Totnes. This walk is a great way to spend the day and take in all that North Devon has to offer. Croyde to Saunton From the imposing bulk of Castle Drogo – the last castle to be built in England – and following the breath-taking Hunters Path high above the River Teign, this is perhaps the most famous walk on Dartmoor. This two-hour route is full of beauty, with rolling hills and lush meadows that are a joy to behold. Bolberry Down is managed by the National Trust, so this lovely area has a network of well-maintained, easily accessible paths from which to admire the sea views and rare coastal grassland.

Dartmouth Castle is one of the most beautifully located fortresses in England (Image: DC Media) 7) Wembury Beach to Heybrook Bay Aylesbeare Common is a great place for nature lovers and those who want to soak up some peaceful countryside vibes away from it all. After your walk, why not take a break in one of the traditional pubs or cafes located in the nearby villages? Whatever you choose to do, you’re sure to be captivated by the beauty of Heddon Valley. Exmoor National Park The trail passes through an ancient wood and up to the summit of Fire Beacon Hill, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. This beautiful and peaceful area is perfect for an afternoon stroll, taking in the stunning views and breathing in the fresh air.Hillsborough also has a bird's-eye view of Ilfracombe, where Damien Hirst's 25-metre tall stainless steel and bronze statue Verity watches over the harbour, along with 14th-century chapel St Nicholas and the Landmark Theatre (known locally as "Madonna's Bra"). There are Iron Age ramparts around the summit of the hill, and its variety of habitats encourages a range of wildlife, including peregrines and nesting seabirds. 45) Appledore and Northam Burrows

Heading inland around Braunton Marshes, a large area of wet pastureland reclaimed from the sea in the 19th century, the walk also passes the Braunton Great Field, one of only three medieval strip-farming fields remaining in England. 44) Hillsborough's Sleeping Elephant

Great Devon walks, with a roast dinner chucked in...

Lee Bay is renowned for the fuchsia hedges around its cottage gardens, and its secluded beach used to be the perfect place for smugglers to land their contraband. 47) Hartland to Spekes Mill Mouth and Waterfall There are a number of routes that you can take, but if you want a nice easy stroll take the loop route that heads east along the coast. You’ll pass the Port Light Hotel, then head along the coast, passing a number of viewpoints and benches. When you reach the return point you’ll be able to see along the coast as far as Rame Head in Cornwall, and on a clear day you should be able to see the Eddystone Lighthouse guarding a dangerous reef 8 miles out from Rame Head. As you journey through the region, you will be treated to spectacular views of the Bristol Channel, the North Devon Coast, and the rolling hills of Exmoor. You couldn't ask for a better view of the estuary from here – a landscape of natural beauty and diverse wildlife. Birds love to wade in the shallows and the pathway is a prime spot to watch them from. 36) Central Park
